Lanelia was a strange and colourful vine. Its weaving fronds were dark green and purple and covered in thousands of tiny perforations. Large fan-shaped leaves resembling Swiss cheese hung from the thicker vines, but the flowers were the focal point of the plant. Each petal was a mesmerising kaleidoscope of red, orange and yellow swirls, surrounding a curved blue carpel and long, elegant stamens. The sepals wrapped around the base of the flower creating an irresistible invitation.
 
‘And therein lies the danger.’ Miguel pushed his arm through the vines to reach the bloom. ‘The flower is an alluring princess in an impenetrable fortress.’ The second his fingers touched the pollen-laden anthers, the petals snapped shut.
