The family home of the Ono clan was magnificent. The house, Dojo, stables and yard had nestled in the sprawling grounds for over a thousand years. Though parts of it had been rebuilt over the centuries, many of its original features had been preserved. Stately trees dotted the lawns and willows draped delicate limbs into pretty streams. The outer wall and sturdy gate were high and foreboding, however, once inside the perimeter, the graceful landscaping and intricate gardens exuded tranquillity and understated grandeur.
They reached the main house by crossing an elegant arched bridge. Bamboo chimes and ornate cages teeming with coloured songbirds swung from the eaves.
